What are passkeys?
Passkeys are a secure, passwordless way to sign in to your account. Instead of typing a password, you can use your device's PIN or biometrics (like your fingerprint or facial recognition) to log in.
They work by creating two keys that can only be used together. One key is on your device; the other is on Autotrader. Together, the pair can log you in to your account, but individually, they're useless.
How do I know they're secure?
Passkeys are highly secure because:
They are phishing-resistant and built on strict web authentication standards
They can't be stolen, guessed or reused like a password
We never see your private key
Your device's biometric or PIN is always required to authorise a login
What if I lose access to my passkey?
If you lose access to your passkey, you can always use the traditional login process, which includes your username, password and 2-factor authentication.
What if a user leaves and they have created a passkey?
If a Portal user leaves your business, you should delete their Portal access to secure your account. You can read more about your responsibilities for account security in our terms and conditions (sections 6.2 and 12.8.2)
