Selling a car yourself can seem scary, but following these key points can keep you safe when selling your vehicle:
-
Be prepared - Have all the relevant paperwork ready, such as the V5C, service history and MOT certificate. If you've hidden your registration plate in your advert images, an interested buyer may ask you for this because they'll need it to complete a basic vehicle check. It's best to have a conversation with them first to make sure you're happy to give any information that isn't shown on the advert.
Make sure you don't:- Leave an interested buyer in possession of the V5C
- Leave an interested buyer in possession of the keys
-
Give the interested buyer the document reference number
-
Be aware of scammers - A genuine buyer should want to view the vehicle before making payment. Ask for the potential buyer's contact details, e.g. their mobile number, landline number and full home address. Make sure you're not alone during the viewing. If you have a friend or relative with you, it's less likely that scammers will have the chance to distract you.
-
Be together - Always go with the buyer on a test drive. If they want a test drive, make sure they bring their driving license and that they're covered by insurance to test drive the car.
-
Be cautious - Keep hold of the vehicle keys and all the documents until the full payment has cleared in your bank account. If a buyer wants to test drive, check that they have a driving licence and the relevant insurance. During a test drive, only hand keys over once you are in the car and take the keys out yourself before exiting.
-
Be alert - Make sure you can always see the vehicle keys and take them out of the ignition when you change seats on the test drive
- Be at home - Always arrange to meet a buyer at your home or a location you are familiar with. Arrange viewings during the day, and have someone present with you for viewing if possible.
Good to know: We are a UK-based website, so it is a little unusual for someone to make a private sale enquiry from abroad. It is more common for buyers based abroad to contact trade advertisers.
