This check shows if a vehicle has been recorded as a write-off by an insurance company.
This could be because the vehicle is so damaged that it's not safe to drive. It could also be because the vehicle would cost more to fix than what it's worth.
Find out more about the different write-off categories below.
What should I do if this shows on my Vehicle Check report?
If your check shows a write-off category, contact the seller to find out as much as you can about the damage and how it was repaired.
Many Category C, D, S and N vehicles are safely repaired. You should still check to make sure they are roadworthy.
You shouldn't buy a vehicle that's a Category A or B. If you spot one on Auto Trader, let us know!
Can you tell me the exact area of damage?
-
The insurance company does not release this detail of information.
-
They only tell us the category of write-off. This gives us an indication of the severity of the damage.
-
If you want more details, we advise getting the vehicle mechanically inspected.
Can I see records of previous accident damage?
If the vehicle has been written off by the insurance company, it will have a category marker assigned to it.
If the vehicle hasn't been written off, but has been fixed, we won't have a record of it.
