Mileage should increase as a vehicle ages. If the numbers are out of sequence, this could be a sign that the vehicle has been 'clocked'. This means that the vehicle has been tampered with to show a lower figure than the actual mileage.
Mileage is usually inputted manually so wrong information could also be a typo. Please note: the DVLA rounds the mileage to the nearest thousand.
What should I do if this shows on my Vehicle Check report?
-
Check that the current mileage is correct by looking at the MOT and service history
-
Contact the seller to find out as much as you can about the vehicle's mileage history
What if there is no mileage information?
There are times when there is no mileage data. There are two main reasons for this:
-
When the garage that services it does not submit any data.
-
When the owner does not enter any mileage on the V5C form when they submit it to the DVLA for a keeper change.
This is due to mileage records not being compulsory. You should check MOT (Ministry of Transport) certificates and service records to make sure that the mileage data is acceptable.
